“When it comes to events, it’s all about the ambiance. With Our DJ Rocks, you can have an atmosphere that compliments your music and the vibe of the room. In addition to our full wedding music coverage, we can add uplighting, live musicians, dance floor lights, special effects like a cloud or snow, and even a photo booth.”
What exactly is wedding uplighting?
Uplights are little lightboxes that we strategically place around a space to illuminate light from floor to ceiling. They are typically placed along the walls (or pillars) of the reception space and can be set to any color to compliment your layout and decor, from vibrant purple to a more neutral color such as white, amber, or champagne. They stay one color all night, but you also have the option with some companies – like Our DJ Rocks – to have “Party Mode Uplights” that will change colors to the beat of the music! Of course, we wait to turn that feature on until after dinner and formal dances. It’s an awesome way to add energy to the dance floor! See it in action here!
Why is it important and what should couples know about it?
It totally transforms the room! Uplighting sets the atmosphere of your reception from the moment your guests walk in. Whether it be romantic candlelight colors or shades of blue to match your winter theme – it adds to the overall design of your wedding. A lot of couples tend to fear uplighting because they see photos of green or purple lights along a wall and immediately hate it. While we have about 25 different colors to choose from like blue and purple and green, we love getting to show couples more neutral options that match their wedding colors and venue. Uplighting needs to compliment your vision and venue, and it’s okay if you don’t like some uplight colors! We love helping our couples pick colors that are the best fit for them and their wedding!
Is it necessary? Why or why not?
It depends on the venue – but usually, YES! Some venues don’t have a lot of natural light, or their walls are blank. Uplighting helps lighten up space without it being TOO bright and takes your reception space to the next level without being overbearing. If you look at a before-and-after photo of a venue, the difference will blow you away. It’s a simple way to bring the colors and design of your wedding together. But the best value in getting uplights is after the wedding when your wedding photos come back and you can see how stunning your reception looked with color all around you! Without uplights, your reception photos could end up looking very dark or look like the background is all black.
Reception spaces that NEED uplighting:
How does it transform a space and what’s the lowdown on doing DIY uplighting yourself?
We’ve had couples consider buying their own uplights online. If you are finding Uplights for $50 on amazon, they are likely going to run out of battery after an hour or so, or the color might not be what you were hoping. And if they are the kind you plug into the wall – can your venue accommodate power for all of them? You also don’t want to have your best man miss an important moment because he is fixing uplights that turned off. The best way to ensure you don’t waste your money on uplights is to rent them from a professional. At Our DJ Rocks, we own industrial, concert quality, wireless uplights that usually cost thousands of dollars to buy new. We use the best quality technology so that we can ensure your uplights last the full duration of your party and are the exact color you want. We also manage them so that you don’t have to, and we always bring backup equipment!
How much does it typically cost/what should you generally budget for it?
The average price of renting uplights is usually $25-$50 per uplight. At Our DJ Rocks, we recommend a minimum of 12 uplights so that we can evenly distribute lights around the room. However, some venues with large reception spaces really need 18 or 26 uplights to create the ambiance you want. We recommend budgeting around $500 to make the most out of adding this element to your wedding day!
What is the “best” uplighting? Are there any misconceptions couples should know?
Okay so here is the technical explanation that a lot of couples might not even know to ask about when renting uplights! At Our DJ Rocks we use RGBAW LED Uplights, and what that means is that they last twice as long as standard battery-operated uplights and they can provide twice as many colors as a regular LED uplights!! They are also wireless so that they can be placed anywhere without being restricted to outlet access.
Anything else on the topic you’d like to add?
If you’re not a fan of using color – we recommend choosing between White, Blush Pink, or Amber!
White – We like to call white the underdog of uplighting colors. It’s clean, classic, and compliments all venue styles. It lights the space and isn’t overwhelming.
Blush Pink – This color is soft, romantic, and matches a lot of wedding color schemes! Use this to accent your wedding colors without it being overwhelming!
Or if you have vibrant wedding colors and want to make the room pop – use the colors to match your wedding! (Green, Blue, Purple, Red, Pink, etc.) You can also stagger color to accentuate your theme – like blues and purples for a celestial feel.
